Sabalenka struggled, fought back to 4-2, but ultimately had to surrender. The Americans, who are longing for a successor to legend Serena Williams, saw how Gauff, the new number three in the WTA ranking, fulfilled her promise.

She is the first winner from the United States since Sloane Stephens (2017) and the first teenager since Serena Williams (1999) to win the US Open. She won the tournament six times, her six Venus twice. “This is the first time I have seen my father cry,” the winner said, laughing. “You have always believed in me, from the beginning. My father took me to Venus and Serena on this court.”

Her career took off four years ago, when Gauff reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a 15-year-old. Now she has won her first Grand Slam title. “I called my brother via Facetime, but he didn’t answer. He called back, but then I had to go.” And not much later she stood with a check for 3 million dollars (2.8 million euros) in her hands.
