Cars are faster than ever, with high power levels easily accessible. The new 911 Turbo S packs a punch on the track, and the aftermarket has been working to squeeze more power out of the model. In a new video, one of these modified specimens takes on a stock Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar in several drag races, showing that the performance gap has narrowed.

A horse apart

The 918 Spyder is powered by a hybrid powertrain. Porsche has paired its naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 with two electric motors, one on each axle. This configuration develops 887 horsepower and a torque of 1280 Nm.

The 911 Turbo S opposite it does not have electric assistance, but it benefits from a slight adjustment from ES Motor. The famous 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six develops 650 hp and 800 Nm of torque as standard, but a set of improvements, such as new intercoolers and a titanium exhaust kit, increases the power. The modified 911 develops 888 hp, one more than the 918, and a torque of 1000 Nm.

The 911 without electric assistance, therefore lighter

The 911 is also lighter than the 918, weighing 1,640 kg. The hybrid, for its part, weighs 1674 kg. Both models feature all-wheel drive, but different gearboxes separate the engine from the wheels, with the 918 fitted with a seven-speed gearbox. The 911 is equipped with an eight-speed PDK gearbox.

The only race the Spyder won was the first. He caught the 911 off guard, darting ahead of the Turbo S and crossing the finish line first. The 911 didn’t lose again after that, winning the other three drag races. It completes the quarter mile (around 400 meters) in 9.7 seconds, compared to 9.9 seconds for the 918.

Things did not improve for Porsche’s hybrid hypercar during rolling starts. In all four races, the 911 crossed the finish line before its competitor. The 918 couldn’t even outperform the 911 in the braking test, falling by a bumper.

Ten years ago, the 918 Spyder was a cutting-edge car, with astronomical performance and an equally high price tag. Today, a tuned 911 Turbo S can outperform it for a fraction of the price…
